Pre- and Post-Contact3 GIF animation
of Total Solar Eclipse July 11th 2010
(Color- and contrast enhanced for best visibility of chromosphere and prominences)

This GIF animation of Total Solar Eclipse 2010 is made of 145 pictures (img_6718 to img_6862) shot by the author before and after 3rd contact by a Canon EOS 40D camera with a 500 mm f/6.3 mirror lens.

Processing:
The pictures of this animation have 3/4 resolution. They were rotated by 106° clockwise so that the point of 3rd contact appears roughly at top and sun's equator lies roughly horizontal. After rotation, the pictures were processed with a sigmoidal contrast function (What is a sigmoidal function ?), a boost to a gamma of 2.5, and a boost of color saturation by 50% to provide best visibility of chromosphere and prominence features.
Then they were cropped to 1280x768 pixels (in full resolution, i.e. 960x576 pixels in 3/4 resolution), so that only the upper half disk of sun/moon is shown to safe file size. Each picture then got a red annotation in northeast corner with it's base name.
Then a morphed GIF animation (with 3 calculated frames between adjacent original images) of those 145 pictures was made, to produce a smooth flow. At last, the animation was annotated by authors copyright (in green) in the northwest corner.
The built-in delay between frames is 100 ms which gives a maximum frame rate of 10 pictures/sec (depending on Your browser and computer).
It is planned, to publish a newer version of this work in near future, with additional annotation of timestamps in UTC.

The actual visible size may be shrunk or blown-up - depending on width of Your browser window (size is set to 60% of window width).

Howto:
Click to image for viewing the 3/4 resolution version (size is ~70 MB with frame size of 960x576 pixels) - it would be wise to have enough internet bandwith for a bearable download time !
After the film has completed one whole loop and is starting over to the beginning again You may save it to Your hard disk because now it's already in Your browser's local cache. For saving to disk, please follow the procedures of Your favourite browser.
