This page shows the authors (Rolf O. Blättner and Waltraud Kraußer-Blättner) and tries to reflect the
transit day. Since we'd no photos of our own we asked our friends from California - Karl Marhenke and his wife Randa
for helping. Karl was very kind and loaded all his pictures which are showing us to a FTP site which
I'd created especially for such transfers.
We say thank You very much to Karl for his efforts and his permission to publish the pictures here !! Since the weather on transit day looked quite mixed (more and more clouds were building up on the shore and also over the flat NW region of the island), we decided to move up to the summit of Mauna Kea. This was our "plan B" ... In mid afternoon - the transit was well in progress - we were forced to pack and go down because the wind speed pitched too much and also some of our batteries showed signs of weakening. So we re-joined Karl and Randa at the Onizuka Visitor Center halfways up on the mountain. Then we proceeded to a favourable place on the shore which we had already spotted a day before as the observation site in case of good weather (that was our "plan A"). We were lucky ! Since the clouds hovered mainly over land we could look below them to the diving down Sun & Venus. And we got the last phase of the transit too :-)) |
Before watching the Transit of Venus we had to move to our primary observing site: summit of Mauna Kea.
Here You see the author sitting in front of our rented 4WD car.
When looking at minuscle details of this image You may ... |

Upon arrival at the
Onizuka Center for International Astronomy
Visitor Information Station on Mauna Kea
we learned that the access road to the summit was closed for private cars today
:-(
We had to go by shuttle bus and it was only allowed to carry what You can take on Your lap and under the seat. So we unpacked all our gear and ... |

... carried the heavy stuff from the parking lot to the bus - it was a quite strenuous effort, hard on the limit of our strength.
In this image and it's cropped and enlarged version You see the author and his wife fully packed-up while trekking from the parking lot to the shuttle. |
